DOHUK, IRAQI KURDISTAN - 18 October 2019. Aya Toreen at her wedding party. Aya works with The Jinda Organisation, supporting Yazidi refugees from the conflict with ISIS and with the Turks in Syria. We became friends on first meeting, and stayed in touch. It was not a straight path from first meeting her wondeful husband to her wedding day, with some family twists and turns along the way, but she is a determined lady, and they are very much in love. Love conquers all.
'NO FRIENDS BUT THE MOUNTAINS'
SULAYMANIYAH, IRAQI KURDISTAN, 29th NOVEMBER 2014. I had arrived in Sulay' to visit a minefield clearance project on the border with Iran near Haji Omran, one of the largest minefields in the world. We had a villa in Sulaymaniyah. It's an unusual town. Quite conservative, not the bars and clubs of Erbil, but I was told it was very friendly. I woke up early in the morning and decided to go for a walk around town. Our villa was in a good neighborhood, next to the Provincial Governors compound, which sits on a small rise. The murals are painted on the retaining wall for his compound, which sits at the top of the photo. The Kurds have a keen sence of history and of culture. These murals represent both.
