'NO FRIENDS BUT THE MOUNTAINS'
SULAYMANIYAH, IRAQI KURDISTAN, 29th NOVEMBER 2014.
I had arrived in Sulay' to visit a minefield clearance project on the border with Iran near Haji Omran, one of the largest minefields in the world.
We had a villa in Sulaymaniyah. It's an unusual town. Quite conservative, not the bars and clubs of Erbil, but I was told it was very friendly.
I woke up early in the morning and decided to go for a walk around town. Our villa was in a good neighborhood, next to the Provincial Governors compound, which sits on a small rise. The murals are painted on the retaining wall for his compound, which sits at the top of the photo.
The Kurds have a keen sence of history and of culture. These murals represent both.
